Fort Myers: The City of Palms
The majestic city of Fort Myers is the administrative and commercial center of Lee County, Florida, it is also one half of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city of Fort Myers covers an area of 49 square miles, with nearly 20% of that being water, Fort Myers is a wonderful location for fishing! Fort Myers, along with the rest of Southwestern Florida, has a tropical savanna climate with annual average highs of 85°F and lows of 66°F. The city has seen a surge in population in the past decade, growing over 15,000 new residents, putting the current population at an estimated 77,000!
Fort Myers was named after American Colonel Abraham Myers and was originally a fort built in the 1830’s (however Fort Myers was not officially as a community until 1866) by the American forces during the American Indian Wars and has since played host to the winter estates of legendary American inventors Thomas Edison and Henry Ford (which have since become popular tourist attractions). Edison also helped contribute Fort Myers’ nickname of “City of Palms”, when he had royal palms imported that line modern day McGregor Ave.
